Luau is scheduled to be at the end if the year.

What Are The Officer Positions And What Do They Do?

The officers organize the practices and choreograph the dances. They also prepare for the year and plan luau and any other performances. The jobs of the positions are:

Presidents: Helps run the club and helps the officer board with the tasks. Plans meetings and events. *can only be a returning officer*

Vice Presidents: Helps run the club and helps the officer board with the tasks. Plans meetings and events. *can only be a returning officer*

Members Relations: Incharge of the attendance and member involvement. 

Public Relations: Manages instagram account, remind, and makes flyers.

Secretary: Handles business with USB and is our UCC rep.

Historian: Incharge of end of year banquet, luau video, and takes pictures throughout the year.

Treasurer: Handles budget and income for the club.

Junior Officers: Helps out with any position and helps run the club. 

How Do I Become An Officer?

To become an officer you must be a member of the club and fill out the officer application. There will be an interview that will be held by an advisor and the senior officers. 

Where Can I Buy Raffia And How Do I Make A Raffia Belt?

Raffia can be bought at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, or Walmart. Click here to view the video on how to make a raffia belt. We will specify closer to rally whether we are doing a full or half raffia belt.

How Often Are Practices?

Practices are every Tuesday after school from 2:30pm-4pm, and is later changed to 2:30pm-4:30pm. During second semester Saturday practices are added that go from 10am-1pm

What Do We Do At Practice?

You learn the basic moves of different styles of Polynesian dances, which are later used in choreographed dances that are taught and performed.

Is There An Attendance Policy?

Yes, you cannot have over 3 unexcused absences, or you will be exempt from participating in specific activities. To be excused from an absence, contact an officer to let them know why you cannot attend practice.

What Do I Do If I Can't Make A Practice?

Let an officer know, which can be done by sending them a text through remind. There are makeup practices on Monday to make up for absences.

Is There Anything We Have To Pay For?

There is an $8 membership fee, which is later raised to $10 if not paid within a specific time frame. Girls must also buy a pareo(a tahitian skirt) for $5, as it is required for practices. Costumes will need to be purchased for rally and luau later in the year, but the cost depends on the amount of dances you are in and what the costumes require.

What Performances Are There?

We perform at rally during second semester, 8th grade orientation, and our annual luau. There may be performances on the library stage during lunch and/or anything else that comes up.

What Types Of Dances Do We Do?

  • Girls:

Girls hula- A dance with smooth, flowing moves.

Girls Tahitian- A dance with sharper and faster moves.Also known as ‘ote’a

Aparima- A slower, and smoother dance than an ‘ote’a focusing on the movement of the hands and hips.

Poi- A dance were the poi balls are attached to a string and swung in a rhythmic motion.

  • Guys: 

Boy hula- A dance with smooth, flowing moves.

Boys Tahitian- A dance with sharper and faster moves.Also known as ‘ote’a

Haka- A Maori war dance with shouts, vigorous movements, and facial expressions. . 

Hunters- A dance performed with the spinning of a  long wooden stick 

  • Everyone:

Rally- A fusion dance with moves from different Polynesian cultures. 

Finale- A fusion dance with moves from different Polynesian cultures. 

Couples hula- A hula dance performed with a partner.

Couples Tahitian- a Tahitian dance performed with a partner.
